What is Online Coaching?

Machine Assisted Chin Up Exercise Programmed By My Online Coach Abel

Online coaching? Working with a personal trainer online?

Probably does not make any sense. Since we are accustomed to the notion of working with a personal trainer in person.

BUT it is exactly as it sounds.

All you need is access to a gym and/or equipment at home. No equipment, no problem. Also access to a computer, phone, tablet, etc.

You can work with a personal trainer regardless of geographic location.

Let’s dive deeper into this.

How Does It Work?

I provide personal training and/or nutrition guidance. I prefer to provide both as the two go hand in hand but I discuss this with each client. I will explain my process of how I work with my private online coaching clients.

  • Clients can apply online via my website

  • I speak with a client to find out the following: what their goals are, training history, any injuries and if they have access to gym/equipment.

  • After our call we start within 1-2 days.

  • Set up a monthly billing date as the rates are per month rather than per session when training in person.

  • Have the client set up a free MyFitnessPal account and/or provide an alternative. Such as a food journal, sending daily photos, etc.

  • I set customized macros for the client (protein, carb and fat). As well as setting overall daily caloric intake (deficit - fat loss), (maintenance - not losing or gaining weight) or (surplus - bulking).

  • I program a client for a 4 week program based off goals, access to gym/equipment, home workouts. The PDF program is customzied per client, includes provided YouTube instructional videos & notes/guidelines.

  • Clients are added to a private Instagram Group where everyone can connect and support each other.

  • Review MyFitnessPal food logs daily/weekly for each client. Providing guidance to each client with a weekly email review. See sample below.

  • Send weekly personalized email check in every Saturday. See sample below.

  • Send weekly group email check in every Saturday. See sample below.

  • Clients can film their workouts so I can review their form. Android users can upload videos into GoogleDrive. Apple users I create a shared album where videos can be uploaded.

  • A data scheduled is provided monthly asking for weight, body measurements and progress photos. An editable shared Google Drive document is provided to house the data.

  • If a phone call is needed, we can schedule and speak when needed.

  • Clients have access to me via email, Instagram, text message, FaceTime and/or phone call.

  • Have fun!

Pros

  • You can work with a personal trainer if you both do not live in the same state.

  • The cost is monthly rather than per session. More cost effective.

  • Can workout whenever you want without the worry of having to meet with a personal trainer for an appointment.

  • Can be on your time.

  • The experience is what you make of it.

Cons

  • Sometimes we learn better in person.

  • It can be motivating to know that a personal trainer is waiting for you at the gym.

  • In person personal training can be pricer.

  • Not having access to a mobile and/or electronic device.

  • The experience is what you make of it.

Conclusion

I worked with an online personal trainer Susan Dangerfield for two years. It was my first time. I loved it. I worked out at home in the mornings before I left for my 9 -5 and did not invest in a gym membership. I loved my email check ins and the progress I made. It inspired me to want to work with clients as an online coach.

Coaching is an investment. All coaches have coaches. Right now I am hybrid. Meaning I am an online coaching client and also workout in person. I provided a YouTube video up above as an example of the exercises programmed for me by Coach Abel and the form video I took for him to review.

Online coaching is such a great, effective and affordable means to include fitness into your everyday. I recommend giving it a try for a month to see if this method of training works best for you.

Here are some testimonials from a few of my online coaching clients.
